Afghan Taliban and Pakistani Forces Report Multiple Deaths in Fresh Border Clashes

Frontier Conflict Intensify
Pakistani Military and Afghan Authorities Blame Each Other of Starting Attacks in Afghanistan's Frontier Region of the Spin Boldak Area

Fresh fighting broke out along the Pakistan-Afghanistan frontier early on Wednesday, with each side accusing the other of starting lethal confrontations.

The Pakistani armed forces stated that its forces had killed "fifteen to twenty Afghan Taliban" and wounded numerous others in the Spin Boldak frontier area.

A Taliban government spokesman said that twelve Afghan civilians had been fatally struck and over a hundred wounded by Pakistani firing. He added that numerous military personnel had been killed. None of the alleged fatalities could be independently confirmed.

Violence between the neighbouring countries has flared since explosions rocked Afghanistan recently, which the Afghan capital blamed on Pakistan. The Taliban reject claims that it is sheltering militants aiming at Pakistan.

Social Media and Armed Engagements

The two sides are not only battling for the advantage on the border, but also on social media, trying to convince the general population that their faction is causing greater losses.

The latest fighting come after intense border hostilities over the weekend, when the Taliban asserted to have killed 58 members of the Pakistani military and Islamabad reported it killed 200 "Taliban and affiliated terrorists". The reported death tolls provided by each side could not be independently verified.

A few days of fragile calm that had lasted since the recent days were shattered on Wednesday morning.

Local Reports and Impact

Footage purportedly of the conflict and its aftereffects have been circulated online and on social channels, including footage claiming to be of those deceased and blurry shots from night vision cameras claiming to be of guard positions destroyed. These videos have not been verified.

A source in Spin Boldak in Afghanistan stated that clashes broke out at around 04:00 local time (11:30 p.m. GMT on the previous day). Another local in the district, who lives about one kilometre away from the border crossing, said that "intense clashes persisted for almost five hours".

"We observed unmanned aircraft and jets soaring over us, a number of our relatives are injured," they added.

A doctor in one of the hospitals in the region reported that he counted "7 fatalities and 36 injured brought to the hospital", including men, women and children.

The circumstances were "strained" and more casualties were being taken to hospital, he said.

Evacuations and International Responses

A local Taliban official in Spin Boldak stated that "hundreds of families have been displaced since the previous evening due to the intense fighting". He said they were on "high alert" after a few military positions were attacked by Pakistani jets. He added that they had the bodies of two armed forces members.

In a separate overnight clash on the western frontier, the Pakistani military said that twenty-five to thirty Taliban and Pakistani Taliban fighters were "believed" to have been killed.

The hostilities have prompted appeals for reduced tensions from foreign nations including China and Moscow, as well as a proposal from US President Donald Trump that he could intervene to facilitate peace.

On Wednesday, a UN official, UN special rapporteur on the conditions of civil liberties in Afghanistan, wrote on X that he was "very worried" by accounts of non-combatant deaths and displacement because of the clashes.

"I urge all parties to practice maximum restraint, protect non-combatants, and abide by international law," he stated.

Long-Standing Disputes

Pakistan has for years accused the Taliban authorities of permitting the Pakistani militants to function from their territory and battle against the Pakistani administration in an attempt to enforce a rigid religion-based system of governance.

The Taliban leadership has always rejected this.
